Shawn “Origix” Featherston and Tim “D.C.” Patterson met in Jr.High School, making mix tapes of their favorite music, to grow up hosting their own Radio program at 89.3 WHFR.FM at Henry Ford Community College. In 2002, when commercial radio was changing drastically, The Zone Radio was born on the far end of the FM Dial, and became more of a community project than a simple radio show. Origix & D.C felt it was their mission to expose what Real Hip Hop still is. Guest’s on The Zone range from Talib Kweli, Cypress Hill, Yukmouth, Tech N9ne, Black Milk, Kid Cudi, Bizzy Bone, Slug of Atmosphere and Twizitid. For Three hours every Monday night listeners are able to hear a new pay list of independent music, news, live performances and information about Hip Hop artists.

With popular demand and expansion of the Internet, Origix & D.C. have established www.2raw4fm.com, where they host uncut podcast mixes of The Zone Radio, gaining listeners world wide and serving as the home of their many projects.

Aside from being on air, The Zone has put on some legendary events around Michigan, and continues to be involved in the Detroit community. Origix writes the The Zone Column weekly at www.motorcityblog.net, as well as many website networks, trying to get the voices of the underground heard.

Origix & D.C have released an album of new material and are back to offer their perceptive on the rap game and life. “The Resume” an album that showcases the way they lay down rhymes and produce music. The Resume is a lyrical background check that provides proof these two veterans of Detroit hip hop still have what it takes to be relevant today.

Progress Report
Progress Report makes hip hop fun again, avoiding topics of drugs and violence, and instead focuses on the positive energy of music.
“Scoring points for originality, quality production, insightful lyrics, catchy hooks and their ability to play well with others, D.Allie (United States of Mind) and Eddie Logix (Midcoast Most) have teamed up to take their conscious art form to new heights. The result, though far from over, is Progress Report – a new project that bravely blends elements of soul, funk, rock and hip-hop.” Emily Copeland, Real Detroit

sAMPLE tHE mARTIAN

Sample the Martian samples ideas of the future and dedicates music to the issues of the present. Performing songs in tribute to Open Source Programmers and Non-Malicious Hackers, amongst his topics, eMpyre plays all the instruments, sings and raps.
“Sample The Martian drops tracks that push the conventional expectations of hip-hop with old-school beats, psychedelic guitars, analog synths, and abstract lyrics that flow like water from the subconscious of one ungrounded dude.” -Fuze Magazine

Lazy D
Describing himself as being “From the gutters of Cincinnati”, Lazy D has been amazing audiences with his charming lyrics and visual appeal…he often dresses like a pirate.
“Lazy Ass Destroyer is a raw hip-hop/rock energy, while some of the lyrics are comical, this band takes its delivery seriously. It is a loud Beastie Boys meets Crunk meets Rock sound.”- City Beat

This week’s crew has one of the best spins on a group name that I have heard in a while; “Cold Men Young” yes, they are using the ex mayor of Detroit’s name and giving it a hip-hop feel. Mic Write, Blak Smith, Young Phenom and Kopelli came together and unlike many other groups, their background comes from the spoken word, slam poets scene giving them a different out look on rhyming. Kopelli says, “We all had a mutual respect for each others individual skills, all thought each other were dope and just started doing stuff together, informally at first just as friends or emcees doing work together”.

Just over one year ago they set out to create their own brand of music and from the sounds of their tracks you would think they have been together for years. Mic Write explains, “We’re all about having fun and still displaying legit emcee skill. We all are real emcees with different styles. Kopelli is a little more melodic, I kind of come with the bars and the patterns and the cadence variations. Blaksmith has the bars and the “you better listen” and “rewind that” metaphors…Phenom is the aggressive beast with the punch lines”. On their freshmen effort project and album “Champagne Nights/Red Stripe Budget” they definitely bring something different to the table as far as emcees are concerned. While working with producers Jay Norm, Sheefy McFly, Jay Fab from The Olympicks and others, they have laid a solid foundation for Cold Men Young to build on.
